Engineering Director – Mobile Engineering

Position Purpose:
We are seeking a visionary and results-driven Engineering Director to lead our mobile engineering organization at a large-scale retail enterprise. This leadership role is pivotal in shaping the future of our mobile platforms (iOS, Android, and emerging technologies), driving technical innovation, enabling operational excellence, and delivering user-centric mobile experiences. You will partner cross-functionally with product, design, and data teams to ensure strategic alignment while mentoring a high-performing team of engineers and leaders.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Vision (40%)

  • Define and execute a long-term technical strategy for mobile platforms, aligned with key business objectives such as increased market share, customer retention, and revenue growth.

  • Develop and prioritize a scalable engineering roadmap, ensuring the adoption of modern architectural patterns, CI/CD practices, and mobile-first innovations that improve KPIs like crash rates, load times, and user satisfaction.

  • Monitor and evaluate emerging mobile technologies to maintain competitive advantage, ensuring investment decisions are data-driven and outcome-focused.

  • Foster strategic alignment with cross-functional leaders, influence enterprise technology planning, and advocate for mobile-specific initiatives across the organization.

Product Delivery & Execution (40%)

  • Oversee end-to-end mobile product development lifecycles, ensuring high-quality, timely, and secure releases across iOS and Android.

  • Implement rigorous standards for code quality, performance, and security compliance; drive operational excellence through process optimization and enhanced development workflows.

  • Lead initiatives in technical debt reduction, app performance monitoring, incident response, and system reliability to enhance customer experience and reduce Mean Time To Recovery (MTTR).

  • Track and report success through metrics such as release cadence, app store ratings, cycle time, feature throughput, and post-release issue rates.

People Leadership & Talent Development (20%)

  • Build, mentor, and inspire a high-performing team of engineers and managers, cultivating a culture of ownership, continuous learning, innovation, and inclusion.

  • Champion career development initiatives and implement performance management frameworks to achieve productivity, engagement, and retention goals.

  • Lead strategic hiring initiatives to attract diverse top-tier talent, achieving hiring velocity, diversity, and quality benchmarks.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Influence

  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly across technical and non-technical audiences, ensuring transparency, alignment, and strategic buy-in.

Qualifications & Competencies

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in mobile software development with a track record of delivering large-scale iOS and Android applications.

  • Strong technical expertise in Swift/Objective-C, Kotlin/Java, mobile CI/CD, and app performance optimization.

  • Demonstrated leadership in developing, mentoring, and scaling engineering teams.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).

  • Must be 18 years or older and legally authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 12–15 years of progressive experience with 3+ years in a director-level leadership role.

  • Proven ability to define and deliver technical strategy with measurable business impact.

  • Experience with cloud-native mobile architectures, backend services, analytics, and A/B testing.

  • Engagement in the broader mobile development community (open source contributions, conference speaking).

Position Purpose:

Key Responsibilities

Delivery & Execution (50%)

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain software solutions that meet business needs.
