Netflix Job Description – Distributed Systems & Systems Software Engineering

About Netflix

Netflix is one of the world’s leading entertainment services with over 300 million paid memberships in more than 190 countries, delivering TV series, films, and games across a wide variety of genres and languages. Members can watch as much as they want, anytime, anywhere, on any device. Netflix continues to evolve its global content and technology footprint, delivering entertainment experiences with speed, scale, and innovation.

Data Platform & Open Connect Engineering Roles

Netflix's Data Platform and Open Connect (OC) teams are at the forefront of delivering world-class, scalable infrastructure that powers our global streaming and gaming services. These teams build and manage highly available distributed systems that support everything from content delivery and real-time data transport to large-scale data analytics, discovery, and governance. We are seeking Distributed Systems Engineers and Systems Software Engineers to help scale our platforms, innovate infrastructure, and enable data-driven decision-making across all of Netflix.

Spotlight on Teams & Opportunities

1. Data Platform Teams

Data Security and Infrastructure (DSI)

The DSI team is the backbone for our data infrastructure, providing scalable and secure foundational systems that support Netflix’s vast data needs. We focus on infrastructure, security, and deployment systems with a tech stack that includes Go, Python, and Java.

Data Developer Experience (DDX)

DDX enhances the productivity of our data practitioners by eliminating friction in building, maintaining, and using data products. We create tools that streamline the development experience for Data Engineers, ML Engineers, and Data Scientists.

Big Data Compute Spark (BDCS)

BDCS powers Netflix’s batch data processing using Spark and related technologies (e.g., Trino, Iceberg, Druid). We handle Exabyte-scale ETL, large-scale analytics, and support for new business initiatives like Ads and Live content.

Data Movement Platform – Real-Time Data Engines

This team builds low-level infrastructure for real-time data transport (Kafka) and processing (Flink, Mantis). We manage schema registries, reliability, compute resources, and data availability across multiple business units.

Data Discovery and Governance

We build the data catalog, distributed search, lineage infrastructure, and policy engines that ensure data is used efficiently, securely, and in compliance. This platform supports emerging businesses like Games, Ads, and Live.

2. Open Connect Systems Engineering

Open Connect is Netflix’s custom-built content delivery network (CDN) responsible for 15% of all downstream internet traffic (2023, Sandvine report). We develop and maintain the software running on edge cache servers that deliver streaming video and cloud gaming. Our work ensures efficiency, performance, and security at massive scale.
